Nestled in the heart of the Cultural district in Midtown, the Detroit Historical Museum has always been a fount of Motor City knowledge and—of course—history. After a six-month renovation, the museum opens to the public this weekend. I got a sneak peek this past weekend at their Gala and they have done a fabulous job!

This isn’t your normal re-opening, though. The Detroit Historical Museum will open its doors at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, November 23 and stay open straight through 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 25th. Yes, they’ll be open 55 1/2 hours straight this weekend!

Displays in the Allesee Gallery of Culture.

A few of the brand new exhibits include:

Favorite exhibits—such as the Streets of Old Detroit, Doorway to Freedom, America’s Motor City and Glancy Trains—are still there. Sanders Confectionary is a sweet addition to the Streets of Old Detroit.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, Detroit-centrique movies will be shown throughout the night and Buddy’s Pizza will be serving up their famous square slices. Detroit Rock City, Robocop, 8 Mile, Out of Sight and Grosse Pointe Blank will be screened in Booth Auditorium from 10:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. both Friday and Saturday night.

Interactive displays and the Boblo Boat.

The Detroit Historical Museum is now FREE!

Yep—for opening weekend and into the foreseeable future—enjoy free admission to the museum and soak up Detroit history and culture to your hearts content.

With the new interactive exhibits, the Detroit Historical Museum promises to entertain the whole family. Take a break from turkey and shopping this weekend to learn a bit about the Motor City! And—if you can’t make it for their grand re-opening—be sure to add it to your things to do in Detroit list.
