Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

Today is a mixed bag!

First, happy Cinco de Mayo! Looking for authentic Mexican food? Here are some great suggestions from other readers on the best food in Mexicantown.

Second, don’t forget Mother’s Day is this Sunday. If you're looking for a spot to take your mom out to brunch this is a good list to choose from.

Lastly, it has been two months since the catastrophic earthquakes and tsunami in Japan. Ronin Sushi in Royal Oak is serving up some mouth-watering features throughout the month of May with 50% of the proceeds going to the Red Cross to aid the victims of the disasters. Sapporo USA is also matching donations, dollar-for-dollar.

The “rotating chalkboard features” are:

  • Feature maki roll ($14): Pineapple tempura, spicy tuna & fresh cucumber wrapped in green soy paper.
  • Feature cocktail ($10): Cucumber vodka, Momokawa Pearl sake, lychee & lemonade, shaken and served over ice.
  • Feature dessert ($8): Housemade vanilla bean flan with caramel, fresh berries and whipped cream.

Stop by Ronin throughout May and you can help the people of Japan just by grabbing a bite at one of the coolest spots in the area.

Weekend Roundup

1. Prohibition Party - Travel back in time to 1933 with a vintage costume party, live music from the era and 5¢ beers (with purchase of commorative mug). May 7th.

2. Green Street Fair - Entertainment, artisans and fun are mixed with green, organic and eco-friendly products in an effort to encourage people to live a greener life. Do you have old electronics lying around your house? Drop them off here to be safely recycled while helping kids with speech & language disorders. May 6-8.

3. St. Florian Strawberry Festival - Polish food (including city chicken), entertainment and strawberries! The strawberry bakery features pies, tarts, Belgian waffles, and more. May 7-8.

4. Rock and Rummage - Shop for vintage clothing, handmade goods and pop culture mementos while hanging out at The Belmont Bar and listening to live music. May 6th.

The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce's 18th Annual Royal Oak in Bloom is Sunday. It runs from 7 am to 2 pm. It is located in the Williams Street parking lot located in front of Royal Oak City Hall. There will be over 60 vendors who bring everything from flowers to landscaping décor. Get your spring plantings looking good.
