Detroit news you can use & a gift card giveaway
Did you know Detroit just celebrated its 310th birthday this past Sunday? Antoine de le Moth Cadillac founded Detroit on July 24, 1701. The Detroit Historical Museum is commemorating the event with free admission and special programs through July 31st. Check out the full schedule.
Mayor Bing officially announced the Live Downtown program yesterday. The initiative is modeled after the popular Live Midtown program. Read more about it in the Detroit Free Press.
Somerset Collection CityLoft celebrates their grand opening this Thursday, July 28th. The upscale suburban mall will be bringing some of their retailers downtown in a pop up shop. The mini-versions of the shops will be open Thursday through Sunday through September. Somerset Collection City Lofts will be located at Merchants Row at 1441 Woodward.

Costco, it has a lot of everything!
I'd love to see a collection of a bunch of national stores - something similar to Partridge Creek or the Village of Rochester.
I agree a Trader Joes and Apple store downtown would be great!
Id love to see target downtown much like the target in downtown minneapolis. But you can't have a vibrant downtown without a Cheesecake Factory!! that is a must!
Plus, i hear that the founder if from Detroit!! ;)
I would like to see Urban Outfitters and Express for clothes. Macy's would be nice because it has more variety. Although I think stores owned and operated by fellow Detroiter or surrounding areas would be nice to see.
I have to agree with so many of the above! A national retailer, more local retailers, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and I'd love to see a retailer that we do not have here in MI, like West Elm!
I'd love to see an Apple, Whole Foods, and an Old Navy!
I'd love to see more little, independent stores downtown. I love walking around and finding someplace I never knew existed, and going in to find really cool things!
Jamba Juice would be cool for some Chocolate Mood yumminess
I would love to see a Whole Foods downtown due to our shortage of grocers. Maybe if I close my eyes and wish really hard.....
I would love to see a Trader Joes or Super Target downtown.
I'd love to see a Target downtown to get everything I need - they could do a specialty opening like their recent project in Harlem, NY. That's been such a success, so would Detroit!
My vote would be for a Trader Joe's or a Target. Those are the types of stores that would make the decision to move from the suburbs a lot easier. :)
Would love to see my fav store: Target! : )
I would like to see a modern furnishings store downtown for all the new condos/apartments/lofts.
I love the idea of bringing some of the high end retail interest downtown but to really get people moving downtown, they need the basics. A Mejiers or Target would be the most useful. I have a friend that lives in Midtown and still drives up to Royal Oak to do their grocery shopping.
I would love to see an Apple Store or a Windows Store in Detroit as well as a Micro Center. Also, put more organic Spartan stores in Detroit like a Holiday Market.
I'm always a fan of a locally owned shop, however, if we're going big... I'll also jump on the Target train!
While it would be great if the Somerset Shops could just stay permanently, a Target in that area would be great as well!
So, let me understand what has just occurred.
Last month: Curated "Woodward Windows" were a fine aesthetic effort in a block of Woodward Ave. and lauded here.
This week: windows were buffed, snuffed and covered up.
Today: Artified consumerism has engineered a visual takeover of the whole block.
One man's vandalism is another man's marketing plan.
Buy lots of stuff and be happy, folks.
