The Return of the Belle Isle Ice Tree: It's back for 2012!
After a disappointing year without the Belle Isle Ice Tree, I can confirm that it’s back for 2012. A few quick drive-bys on Detroit’s island park last week show that the trees are stacked but more importantly—the water is on! Last year, the trees were stacked but the water was never turned on.
Now, we just have to wait and see if Mother Nature will cooperate this year. The first year that I saw the Ice Tree was in 2009 and the chilly weather and precipitation made it absolutely stunning. In 2010, the tree was big and beautiful but just not as monstrous, charming or animated as it was the previous year. And, of course, 2011 will go down as the Year without the Belle Isle Ice Tree.
I hate to wish for freezing cold temperatures and snow but we do live in Michigan and these things will happen, whether I wish for them or not. So, come on Mother Nature—do your thing!
Yes, my love for the Belle Isle Ice Tree is borderline obsessive—just search for it in the sidebar if you don't believe me—but it's unique and everyone should see it in person.
It’s going to take at least a few weeks, possibly a month or more, for it to be in all its glory. If you do head out there, be careful! The ice on the ground around the tree can be treacherous. Wear boots, ice cleats or crampons if you want to get up close and personal with Detroit’s favorite tree.
I’ll be checking on the progress of the Ice Tree throughout the winter and will post updates. Feel free to post your photos on the Detroit Moxie Facebook page.

I haven't enjoyed this before, only seen your pics. This year, me and the tree are gonna hang out..!
Toka313,
I love it! I think you and the Ice Tree are going to get along fine.
Hi,
I was just out on Belle Isle on the first of the year shooting a video for my blog DetroitVideoDaily.com. I drove around but missed seeing the tree! It was already dark by the time I left, so that's probably why. I'm looking forward to checking this out as the winter progresses. Given how cold it is currently (below freezing!) this tree will be iced over in no time :) Never knew about the tree before. Thanks for sharing!

Hello, everybody there! It is awesome that Belle Ice tree returns to us this year! I like this old tradition, this tree has become so familiar that I can not imagine the winter without it. Besides, my kids will be absolutely delighted to see this little miracle for the first tome in their lives - can not wait to show it to them!
I'm 34 and born and raised in the D and I have of course been to Belle Isle a billion times. Why hav I never heard of the Ice Tree? I'm no longer in Detroit and rarely come back when it's cold, but I need to see this Detroit Legend for myself!
Hello,
I am from Montreal and would like to see this incredible and beautiful Detroit ice tree. Is this taking place in 2013? Thank you any information.
Hi Jean-Francois,
It doesn't look like we're going to have an Ice Tree in 2013 and that makes me sad. I'll be posting about it soon.
Don't cut down the trees from the cities.
I will return from home as soon as rain will stop.
Love is always blind.

The frosty weather and a lot of rainfall made this place really beautiful. We have not seen such changes in an ice tree for a long time.
Thanks for the post.
Good article, I love it!
