Field Trip, the location-based app built by Google’s Niantic Labs, is now available for the iPhone and iPad. The app came out last fall but was only available for Android until now. Detroit Moxie and Historic Detroit are local publishing partners for the app along with heavy hitters including Curbed, Inhabitat, Eater, Food Network, Zagat, Atlas Obscura and Cool Hunting.
From Field Trip:
Field Trip, your guide to the cool, hidden, and unique things in the world around you. Field Trip runs in the background on your phone. When you get close to something interesting, it will notify you and if you have a headset or bluetooth connected, it can even read the info to you.
Field Trip can help you learn about everything from local history to the latest and best places to shop, eat, and have fun. You select the local feeds you like and the information pops up on your phone automatically, as you walk next to those places.
The beautifully designed app is so cool—it’s like having your private tour guide in your pocket! You can customize the notifications and your interests for a completely personalized experience. The app will even take you on a “Field Trip” while you’re driving around town—the app talks to you about the cool and unique places around you!
Want to share an interesting tidbit or fabulous new restaurant you found through the app? You can easily share the information to your social networks.
Did I mention that it’s free? Yep!
Turning the app on while sitting in my living room this is what I see:
- I can read about Frank Lloyd Wright’s Melvyn Maxwell Smith House—which is a mile away—with content from Detroit Moxie.
- A photo of the Machus Red Fox restaurant as it looked on the day Jimmy Hoffa was abducted.
- Learn that the Ryan Gosling/George Clooney film The Ides of March shot scenes around the corner.
- Find out more information about the Cranbrook campus and Cranbrook Institute of Science.
Besides exploring Detroit and finding fun new places in our own backyard, the app would be a perfect companion when traveling and visiting other cities.
Download Field Trip from the Apple App Store or from Google Play for the Android app. Get out there and explore Detroit and beyond!
