Hot Dogs In A Jar & Other Nonsense

Today, July 4th, I would like to say thank you America and happy birthday. I’m grateful to be back in my homeland and I’m proud to be a citizen.

Of course, I’m happy to be near my friends and family again. And I’m all giddy about the freedom and opportunities this fine country has given me. Oh, and that “no taxation without representation,” that’s a good one.

But today America, I thank you for not subjecting me to this:

Hot Dogs in a jar.Yes, I give you hot dogs in a jar. And please note, they are “American” hot dogs. This is what was on offer in the UK. In a jar? Really? I don’t think so.

For my second exhibit, I give you:

Macaroni & Cheese in a can.Yep, that’s macaroni and cheese in a can. I have never missed a blue box so much.

So, thank you America. I love you and your hot dogs that plump when you cook them and the cheesiest mac and cheese in a blue box. Oh, how I have missed you.

Did I mention that there isn’t any good Mexican food in the UK? There isn’t even bad Mexican food to be found, no Taco Bell. Actually, rumor has it that there is a Taco Bell in the UK. It’s on an American Armed Forces base. That didn’t help me at all.

How did I survive such travesties? Suitcases full of ranch dressing, onion soup mix, Cheetos, and Fritos helped. I can also now cook some pretty damn good Mexican food and homemade macaroni and cheese. I must say my guacamole is pretty outstanding. Those hot dogs, however, I just stayed away from.

I must give a big shout out to Britain. Thank you for challenging me and my taste buds. I probably wouldn’t have taught myself how to cook my comfort foods if you didn’t offer the appalling options mentioned above. But, hey, your cheese is amazing; I’ll give you that.

Happy Independence Day to all my American friends! Enjoy your BBQ's and be thankful that your hot dogs don't come from a jar.

I'm not sure I would miss Kraft Dinner but Hot Dogs in a jar is a travesty. Now homemade Mac N Cheese is something I've learned to like!

Oh, and Mac n Cheese with Montgomery Cheddar from Neals Yard would be heaven.

Yup, Tim used to say he didn't like Mac 'n' Cheese...until I hit on a decent combo with homemade that we both like :)

Hot dogs in a jar don't sound appetizing at all to me. We had good old fashioned hamburgers on the grill tonight!

My biggest challenge lately is to find decent (unsweetened) ice tea on demand when I travel.

Tim,
It's not so much missing Kraft Mac n' Cheese, it's about not being able to have it. You crave really weird things that you wouldn't normally want when you live abroad!

Neal's Yard is pretty awesome! We've finally found a strong white cheddar here that doesn't break the bank. Kerrygold Irish Reserve Mature Cheddar at Costco is $10 for 2lbs, which is a steal compared to everything else.

Dominique,
I've tried many different homemade mac n' cheese recipes and a few of them are keepers. I love trying new versions, I think I'm on a lifelong quest to find that perfect mac n' cheese.

Yeah, those hot dogs are just wrong on so many levels!

I recently relocated from the US to the UK and I was ironically writing a post about hot dogs in and jar and stumbled upon this post while doing a Google search for "hot dogs in a jar" as I was looking for an image for my post.

Your post is hilarious and spot on.

Camie,

Thank you! Hot dogs in a jar are an abomination and definitely post worthy. I hope you're enjoying the UK. Whereabouts are you?

p.s. If you haven't found them already, try the Herta hot dogs. They're not in a jar.

You have no clue my dear friend. That fake Kraft blue box mac&cheese is pure rubbish. There was a great canned mac&cheese called Franco American cheese macaroni in a yellow can that rivaled homemade. For some reason Campbells who now owns Franco American decided to stop making it. And as for hotdogs in a jar....they last a long long time. They come in handy when storms arise.

There's were officially 3 Taco Bell restaurants at the time you posted this. In Manchester, Sheffield and one near Londom. There are now 8.
