Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

Spring forward! Don't forget to set your clocks forward one hour this weekend. Daylight Saving Time officially begins at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, March 10th. Do yourself a favor and change your clocks before you go to bed Saturday night.

1. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - Enjoy this classic starring Gene Wilder on the big screen at the beautiful Redford Theatre. Plus the real Charlie Bucket and Mike Teevee will be on hand! March 8—9.

2. Autorama - This is the Motor City and we love our cars. Hot rods, customs, trucks, and specialty cars will all be on show at Cobo Center. March 8—10.

3. Wild Winter Safari Social - Yes, the Detroit Zoo is open all winter! Enjoy animal arts and crafts, face painting, animal enrichment activities, talks by the Zoo’s expert keepers and a winter safari scavenger hunt. March 9—10.

4. The Guard (Facebook link) - Time to kick off the St. Patrick's Day festivities. The St. Clair Cinema Club presents the highest-grossing Irish indie film ever made at Detroit's own Ponyride. March 9th.

5. The 55th Detroit St. Patrick's Day Parade - Speaking of the Irish holiday, Corktown is the place to be this Sunday! Celebrate in Detroit's oldest neighborhood. March 10th.

Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

March comes in like a lion an goes out like a lamb. Right? I hope so, anyway. While we wait for the lamby-lamb to show up with warm weather and sunshine, there are still plenty of fun things to do in Detroit.

1. Comic Jam with Noah Van Sciver - MOCAD and Green Brain Comics are collaborating in this creation of spontaneous, improvised, collaborative comics and free-form drawings with other artists and illustrators. March 2nd

2. Potted Potter - Head to City Theatre for this parody that explores all seven Harry Potter books in a mere 70 minutes. March 1—17.

3. Detroit Derby Girls - Head to The Masonic Temple for this double header bout featuring the Grand Prix Madonnas vs. the Pistolwhippers and the Detroit Pistoffs vs. Devil's Night Dames. March 2nd.

4. Detroit Soup - This monthly dinner funds micro-grants for creative projects in Detroit. For $5, you get a dinner of soup and salad and a vote to make someone's dream project a reality. March 3rd.

5. Dreamtigers - The Hinterlands Ensemble perform this tale set in Mexico about a little girl, her nightmare and insomnia. March 3, 10, 15, 17, 24, 31.

Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

I'm sad to be missing all the fun things to do in Detroit this weekend but I’m off to Grand Rapids for the Winter Beer Festival put on by the Michigan Brewer’s Guild. This much needed weekend away is one of my favorite winter events in Michigan. I highly recommend you try and grab some tickets for next year’s event, they sold out this year in record time.

1. An Evening with Bettye LaVette - Head to the Detroit Public Library and listen to the soul singer talk about her new book, A Woman Like Me. February 21st. She's also performing at the Detroit Institute of Arts on February 22nd.

2. D:hive Underground Bar Tour - Tour downtown's “secret” and subterranean bars in honor of Detroit’s involvement in the Underground Railroad. First drink is included in the $5 ticket! February 23rd.

3. Incredible Journey to Midnight -  Speaking of tours and the Underground Railroad, Hometown History Tours retraces the steps of the Freedom Seekers including safe houses and other sites in Detroit. February 23rd.

4. Palmer Park Winter Fest -  Enjoy ice skating, carriage rides through the woods, entertainment, family-friendly activities and a doggie fashion show in this historic Detroit neighborhood. February 23rd.

5. Empty Bowls fundraiser for Gleaners Community Foodbank (Facebook link) - Purchase pottery bowls by Pewabic Pottery staff and local artists for $5-$25 and recieve a soup and bread lunch. February 23rd.

1. Van Halentine's Day III (Facebook link) - For a nontraditional Valentine's Day, check out Van Halen tribute band Panama as they rock St. Andrews Hall.

2. Celebrate Black History! - Head to The Henry Ford for their exploration of Black History in America. This weekend's activities and special events focus around the Civil Rights Movement. February 16—17.

3. The Dirty Show - The international erotic art exhibition continues this Valentine's Day weekend at Bert's Warehouse in Eastern Market. Through February 16th.

4. The Meaning of Hope - The Detroit Film Theatre is screening this twenty-minute film that "challenges the one-dimensional representations of the City of Detroit through emphasis on the faces and voices of some of its citizens." February 16th.

5. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Solar System - Explore the sun, moon and planets at the Michigan Science Center's Dassault Systèmes Planetarium. Plus, learn about the Mercury Messenger and the Curiosity Rover on Mars. February 16—17.

1. 2013 Beethoven Festival - Immerse yourself in everything Beethoven—32 piano sonatas, 9 symphonies, 5 live webcasts—in this two week fest at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. February 6—24.

2. 2013 Motown Winter Blast - Head down to Campus Martius Park for cool winter events including ice-skating, Professional skating demonstrations, ice sculptures, snowshoeing and entertainment. February 8—10.

3. Borderline: The Story of 8 Mile Road - The Detroit Historical Museum is screening this documentary from 1997  that's billed as "part history, part pop culture." February 9—10.

4. The Dirty Show - It's February in Detroit so it must be time for this international erotic art exhibition and entertainment extravaganza at Bert's Warehouse Theatre. February 8—16.

5. Countdown to Paczki Day - Paczki Day isn't until February 12th but the fun starts early in Hamtramck with special events to hail the glorified jelly donut. February 9—13.
