Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

The holidays are over and the New Year has begun. A thick layer of snow blankets metro Detroit as temperatures plunge to those frigid, below freezing numbers that tempt you to hibernate.

Bundle up and get out there and enjoy Detroit and all the fun things to do in the city!

1. The Moth StorySLAM - Whether you have a story to tell or just want to sit back and listen, Cliff Bell's is the place to be for a fabulous evening. The theme this month is outgrown. Tip: Get there early! January 3rd.

2. Anti-Freeze Blues Festival - It's so cold in the D, time to warm up with some blues at the Magic Bag in Ferndale. January 4—5.

3. Strangers on a Train - What happens when a crazy socialite and a tennis pro meet? Find out by seeing the classic Hitchcock film on the big screen at the Redford Theatre. And they have real butter on their popcorn! January 4—5.

4. Detroit Derby Girls - Missing hockey? Head to the Masonic Temple for a Derby Girls double header featuring the Grand Prix Madonna's, Devil's Night Dames, D-Funk Allstars and Pistolwhippers. January 5th.

5. Drive Table Tennis Social Club - "Enjoy life, play ping-pong, be happy." With a tag line like that, how could you not want to check this place out? They have 8 Olympic quality table tennis courts, a cafe, a shop and lounging area. Check out their Kickstarter campaign. Ongoing.

Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

The post-holiday aftermath: empty boxes litter the living room, shards of wrapping paper can be found in every room and a ton of snow fell on metro Detroit. That’s what our house looks like anyway.

We hope you all had a lovely holiday and urge you to be safe as we head into the New Year’s Eve celebrations. Don’t drink and drive!

Weekend Roundup

1. Michigan Science Center - Formerly known as the Detroit Science Center, the interactive museum is now reopened after being closed since September 2011. Enjoy exteneded weekday hours through January 6th.

2. Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room - This newly opened tasting room features Michigan wine from six of their partner wineries from around the state including Peninsula Cellars and Chateau de Leelanau. Special holiday hours through December 30th. (They are also open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day!)

3. Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Animation Festival - Head to the Magic Bag for your dose of short animated films with a crazy twist. December 27—30.

4. Great Lakes Invitational - Are you Jonesing for some hockey? Catch some college hockey in Detroit at the 48th annual invitational. December 29—30.

5. Motor City Muse: Detroit Photographs, Then and Now - More than 100 photographs are featured in this exhibit exploring the people, city streets, and automobile culture of Detroit. Through June 2013.

Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

According to the Mayans, the world ends tomorrow. And it’s only 5 days until Christmas. We can do this, people!

1. The History of Cigar Making in Detroit (Facebook link) - Join the Detroit Drunken Historical Society at the 1701 Cigar Bar for a history lesson and some drinks. December 20th.

2. A Jazz Nutcracker featuring the Mike Jellick Quintet - Head to the Detroit Institute of Arts for this jazzy rendition of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic The Nutcracker Suite. December 21st.

3. LEGO® Architecture: Towering Ambition - A LEGO® Certified Professional (who knew those existed?) has re-created 13 famous structures including Fallingwater, the John Hancock Center and the Empire State Building. Through February 24, 2013.

4. Detroit Santarchy - Get in the holiday spirit by dressing up like Santa and going on a wild bar crawl. Ho ho ho! December 22nd.

5. The Rink at Campus Martius Park - Get your skates on mate and take a few laps around the ice rink. Afterwards, take a horse and carriage ride around Detroit. December 21—23.

Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

I love the holidays but I’m notorious for last minute shopping. With Christmas less than two weeks away, I better get started. I’ve again included a few options to buy local—and unique—in the Weekend Roundup.

Now, if I could only find those stockings I bought four years ago when we first arrived back in Detroit. It looks like the mantle will be naked for yet another year.

1. Holiday Baar Bazaar - Head to the Majestic Theatre to get some last minute holiday shopping done while sipping on a drink and listening to live music, including I Love Lightning Bugs. Featuring crafters, artists, small businesses and more. December 14th.

2. Holiday Stroll at Belle Isle - Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and the Belle Isle Aquarium host live music  by the Deep River Choir. Also, enjoy the holiday lights and Dutch Girl donuts and mulled cider. December 14th.

3. Metro Times + Detroit Mercantile Merry Market (Facebook link) - If you haven't checked out one of the coolest new shops in the city—the Detroit Mercantile Co.—this is a great time to do it! Featuring 20 Detroit and Michigan based art, design & vintage vendors plus food trucks and beverages. December 15—16.

4. Puppet Scrooge - The Matrix Theatre Company’s annual twist on A Christmas Carol is Detroit-centric and fun for the entire family. December 14—16.

5. Brunch with Bach - Enjoy brunch and Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in the confines of the beautiful Detroit Institute of Arts. December 16th.

1. 3rd Annual Detroit Holiday Food Bazaar (Facebook link) - A pop-up marketplace featuring a variety of Detroit's small independent food vendors. December 7th.

2. The Snow Queen at the Bonstelle Theatre - An adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen tale featuring puppets, music and supernatural magic. Through December 9th.

3. A Civil War Christmas - Head to Historic Fort Wayne and learn about Christmas traditions from the Civil War era. Tours last 1.5 hours. December 8th.

4. DIYpsi - An indie art fair featuring unique, hand crafted gifts. Buy local this holiday season and support independent crafters and artists. Also, beer! December 8—9.

5. Historic Hubbard Winter Market - This classic winter market in Southwest Detroit features our friends from Tashmoo Biergarten, local artists, crafts, music, food and more. December 9th.
